Separate backlight option for viewer
« on: September 02, 2009, 05:37:53 PM »
Hello everyone. I usually use my iPod to read novels. For battery life, I set the backlight option to 10 seconds in the Rockbox setting, which means if there is no action (idle) for 10 seconds, the backlight dims. However, when I read text in the viewer, 10 seconds is to small for a page. Maybe 30 seconds or always on are good values for viewer, but not for general use. I wonder is there a way to separately set the backlight option for viewer, apart from the global one. Thank you!

what you could do is save to separate configuration settings, one set to keep the back light always on and the other to set it to what you normally use.

That is the only way I can think of you being able to do that without changing some source code and recompiling your own build.

Thank you for the suggestion, but it is inconvenient and I cannot find a way to switch config in Rockbox. I pretty think this is a rational feature that viewer developers can consider. Another related issue is about the Lamp plugin. Lamp can keep the backlight always on, but I think it is bad idea to change screen color by touching the iPod wheel. What makes it even worse is, locking the iPod will immediately dim the screen. So every time I just hope I will not touch anything in the front.

Hope the viewer could have Lamp's "backlight alway on" feature.

P.S. If I can achieve this feature, can I submit to the repository and make it official? Is there any procedure I need to follow? Thanks!

You could set Backlight to one of the four Quickscreen settings.

Excuse me, what is Quickscreen? Where can I find the Quickscreen settings? Is it a plugin? Is it available for iPod Video? I cannot find such a name in the wiki. Thanks.

Take a look at the manual, section 5.12.

I see, that's the Quick Screen. The customization part is new to me. However, the Quick Screen is good shortcut for on/off settings, not for long integer list settings, like Disk Spindown time, because it is unidirectional.

BTW, I just added the backlight feature. Just add a option entry, and use global setting or always on. I'll do some more test before I submit to the patch tracker.

As the manual says, as opposite sides of the screen scroll in opposite directions, then if you put the same item at e.g. the top and bottom you can scroll through in either directions.

And if you hold the button down it scrolls.

You can use different configurations by browsing Files and selecting a .cfg file.  I store separate configurations for Books and Music in a folder called CONFIG for easy access.
