iriver H120 bricked?
« on: August 26, 2009, 05:35:36 PM »
Hi, I have this problem with my H120. When I power it up the iriver logo shows and the LCD's blue light comes on, but it soon fades out and the LCD's contrast goes low(I can hardly read what's on the LCD). Then it shows the iriver start up screen (no rockbox on it) and it stays there forever (if I remove the HDD at this point with the power on I get the message "check HDD connections" - this leaves me with the impression that it waits for a signal from the HDD that it never gets). No button does anything except the reset. If I push the hold button and then the reset, it stars up showing that the hold button is on and then powers down. I measured the voltage on some capacitors and although at power up they have 3.3 V after the fade out it drops to 2.3 V. All tantalium caps are OK. I tried swapping HDD and daughterboard but no luck.

Could it be bricked or is it a hardware matter?

Forgot to mention that the player cannot connect to a PC via USB, but the HDD works fine when connected directly to the PC.

UPDATE : I looked at the datasheet of the DC-DC buck-boost regulator (LTC3440) which I suspected. I measured pin 7 which is the shutdown pin and found 1.43volts on it. Surely not enough to keep it alive. I also noticed on the typical application a short between pins 7 and 8. So, this is what I did on the circuit board. The H120 powered up and booted normally + it connects to the PC via USB!!! So, it is definitely NOT bricked. HOWEVER, the cpu is getting verrryyyy hot after a couple of minutes, so what I did is not the best. I searched for schematics and I found them all EXCEPT for the DC-DC converter part!!! as I want to see to what pin 7 (shutdown) is connected to. If ayone has this schematic, please share it with me!!!

Thanks

OK, finally I found out it was a hardware issue. The 6-pin step-down regulator was dead (LTC3405-1.8V). I have ordered a new one. Thanks everyone for your help.
