Media conversion

I have a Sansa E260 and been using AVS Video Converter 6 with the setting on the mpg converter to the Creative Zen Vision M - normal quality - MPEG1 320x240 29.97 fps, to make mpg's from avi's.  This is the closest thing I could find to make playable images on my Sansa.  Unfortunately I lose about 1/3 of the image on playback, but otherwise it's fine.   Could someone more learned please recommend another software package that might give me better results?
