Problem adding artist to Database:
« on: August 11, 2009, 11:11:06 AM »
I've never had this particular problem before and I'm not technologically savvy, so please bear with me.

For the past couple days I have been trying to add an album by Florence + The Machine to my Sansa e200 series player. The files transfer fine but the name will not. I end up with about 6 folders. (Florence and the, Florence and the ma, Florence and the mac, etc) I've removed the + sign and changed the name of the files to say Florence AND the Machine but this doesn't make any difference. I've also tried adding the files both ways. I've used 'drag and drop' and I've tried sending them via a sync with Media Monkey. The result is always the same. This is frustrating because (1) I would like all the files under one folder in the Database and (2) I use QT Scrobbler to scrobble tracks to Last.fm and these are being sent with the incorrect artist name. (Note, when I go to files -> music, the folder shows up as one artist with correct name and files. But if I listen to tracks from the file and then try to send them to Last.fm, they show up with the incorrect artist names again.)

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? I'd really appreciate it.

The filenames aren't used in the database nor in scrobbling. Metadata tags are. Most good mp3 reader would let you edit tags for artist, song name, album name, year, etc.  --  Normalize those (ie, make them consistent) and rockbox/others will be able to list and play them consistently.

Mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/) is one program that really just specialize in tagging media files,  but your wmp/itunes/winamp/etc. will do just fine too. :)

Highlite all of the files in MediaMonkey, Right click, go to Properties, fill-in the
tag info, click OK.  This will change All of the tags at once.

It's also best not to use your Sansa Player in MTP mode, and I would never use a Folder named Music on a Sansa player, you can, but, it always causes problems for people.

HTH!

PaulPosition & BruceHP, thanks for the advice. I obviously don't bother with my tags so I was unaware this could cause a problem. I couldn't figure out how to edit them from Properties either but it could be that the function is not offered with the free version of Media Monkey. I was able to find an option to "clean" the tags and once they were cleaned and re-synchronized, they uploaded to the Sansa just fine. So thanks a lot! I now have the task of cleaning up my tags.
