PictureFlow shortcut in Main Menu
PaulPosition:
Well I can see the additions confusing matter for a blind user being guided through menus ("down three times, select, are you there?, then select again...") but it could easily be avoided by having the added menu items only be appended to the end of the list no matter how menu is usually sorted.
Chronon:
I have some uncertainty about how the voice system would deal with new menu branches.
Llorean:
We already have a shortcuts "feature", in a sense. Why not have a "Shortcuts" option in the main menu that takes the user to a list of shortcuts. These could be links to other menus, links to folders, or what not. Everything under "Shortcuts" is essentially a custom menu (mostly constructed by use of shortcut files, and possible folders of shortcut files to represent nested menus) but no customization outside of that?
While this isn't all out customization, it would be a similar degree of functionality, voicing would simply be dependent upon the regular file name / folder name voicing, and since we'd know exactly where customization could take place it would always be possible to avoid or work around it when providing support.
Part of the issue, of course, is the snowball effect. Providing support *just* for appended things at the end of the list is relatively minor. But in six months people will certainly start asking for more, especially people who aren't around now and don't know that the appended entries are a compromise. The question will go "if we can add them to the end, why not the middle? It's basically the same thing."
It's the "give them an inch, they'll take a mile" effect.
But if you say "customization is only offered within this screen, and limited to what you can create shortcuts to" then people will often ask for better shortcut support, and the ability to shortcut to more types. Something I don't think anyone would really object to over time.
JdGordon:
in theory it is possible to build a menu from all the available menu options pretty simply (code wise), voiceing them is no problem at all, and adding something so plugins could be exectued is dead simple also...
I certainly wouldn't be against adding a "custom menu" at the end of the existing main menu, maybe even letting the user set that as the start screen (we could force that there is an option in the custom menu to go to the real main menu in code...)
MajiKool Dragonâ„¢:
i was wondering... why are the items in the main menu in the order they are?
and are we completely against making this order user changeable?
