I think that's the point linuxstb was trying to make by saying we should only allow adding.
The original options will always be there, there may just be some extra ones.
It might be a small issue if they are allowed to be inserted into an existing menu as opposed to being added at the end - you won't be able to say "the 4th option down", but "Settings" will always be there.

Guys, if you wont do it for money- do it for the BEER. Well... you know, the better the rockbox is, the more people there will be using it... so, more people means more donations... and more donations means more BEER during dev confs ;D ...
...and I still dont see any difficulties in supporting additional menu stuff :)
Anyway, I dream of XML based menus. Is that possible? ::)

I would tend to agree that as long as there's an immutable set of menus and actions mapped to keys, adding things to this doesn't seem as problematic. Of course, it's hard to predict all the behaviors that can arise by mapping multiple actions to a given button press. At least, things like resetting settings should be always doable in this case.

Because you're not providing that support.

Seriously, no way. XML is a complete abortion, and thoroughly thoroughly overkill for our menus.

I really don't understand your objections. Can you give an example of a scenario where having the ability to add extra items to the main menu will cause the kind of support nightmares you're saying will happen?
My earlier point about Apple was that they have millions of users and are not going to add features which they think will confuse their users. This kind of menu customisation is one of those features, and I just don't see how it can be a problem.
But maybe I've missed something obvious...
