WPS copy wright issues

I was browsing my hard drive and I found an old sansa e200 theme I downloaded a long time ago. It is called acotil greens and looks like windows media player 11. I liked it so I worked on porting it to the c200 and was successful. I was wondering if there are any copy wright issues because I do not know if the images were taken from the actual Windows Media Player. It looks like this but I am still not finished so it may change.

Are the images in the theme licensed?  Unless they are licensed with a permissive license you can't reuse them and upload them with the necessary license for the theme site.

i have created a port of the blackglass theme for the gigabeat f from scratch. i published it on the themes site, so it's gpl.  i also have started a wikipage hosting the source psd files. feel free, to take it and modify it to your needs. I'd be very happy, if you'd attach your resources to that wikipage, once you've finished coding and styling.

I'm not sure if they are licensed. I just searched google and found the site that I probably downloaded theme from. It is http://rbthemes.com/. I located the acotil greens theme in it but I do not know if it is licenced.

If you don't know if its licensed, it defaults to "not licensed" and you can use it yourself but not share it with others.

If these resources will be used to make permissively licensed themes then I think it would be good to abide by the same licensing guidelines as for the theme site.  I.e. please include a document in the .zips that describes the licensing for the included files.  It would probably be good to put an announcement on the wiki page reminding people about this as well.

This is correct.  The ACOTIL themes are acknowledged derivatives of the original Black Glass which is an acknowledged copy-and-paste of resources from WMP.

I think it is great if BdN3504 has created alternative resources with a "clean title".

Sorry I didn't notice this post until Llorean resurfaced it.  I've been a bit busy lately.

Just checked http://www.rockbox.org/tw...in/view/Main/WpsResources and there appears to be no licence information on it.
Also are .psd files readily accessible to wps users? I think a .bmp or .jpeg and if many files perhaps zip them

what do you mean by there's no license information? these are files belonging to the theme blackglass, as mentioned on that page (you posted a wrong link btw) and that theme is clearly licensed gpl. this page is intended only for files belonging to themes that are uploaded to the themes site. if you do not comply to the themes site rules (which include licensing) you are not allowed to upload to that page (i'll delete the content). so licensing is very clear.

I edited that wiki page, BdN3504, as the wiki theme pages really shouldn't be edited anymore - except to cull themes once they get properly placed on the new theme site.
As Chronon said, if the theme isn't permissively licensed and its resources aren't - Rockbox doesn't want to add it to the Rockbox collection.  I'll add that if the theme is permissively licensed it should be on the theme site, not the old wiki pages.
Therefore no need to add a link to the resources on the wiki galleries.

agree, i just left that link in there because the wpswiki allows for cumulative uploads as in the theme mentioned on the wpsresources page. can the link to that package still remain on that page, or do you want to have it removed, too?

And just because a theme is permissively licensed does NOT mean that its source data is.

I can permissively license a 100x100 thumbnail of an image without permissively licensing the whole image.

So, you need to always be explicit about the licensing. Licenses like CC-by-SA go *down* the chain of derivative works, but not up to source materials.
