New Users, Question for the Dumb...
« on: August 03, 2009, 12:16:24 PM »
Hello all,

I cant believe i have not heard of this before, which i saw in makezine. and am happy i have found something that could possibly get my ipod to work again.

i own a 160gb ipod, and it just does not sync properly, and has not for some months. it is going to cost £80 to get it fixed from the apple store, which to be honest, i will not pay.

but my question is this. can i use rockbox for this version of ipod?
if not, fair enough, if yes, how can i get it to work?

thanks in advance...

The only 160GB iPod is the iPod Classic, which doesn't work with Rockbox. Sorry.

Recently the encryption for the new iPods was cracked, so theres at least some hope.  I'd check back every couple months and see if anything has happened.

I wouldn't go as far as saying the encryption has been cracked, but a buffer overflow in the Apple firmware has been found and exploited - meaning we can now run code on the 2nd Generation Nano and the 80GB/160GB Classic (in a single specific firmware version).

More information on the progress of a Rockbox port to the Classic (which is still a long way from reality) is in this thread (which will get updated with progress reports):
