No, The Digital Audio Player came before the M-players.  The M has less features and no balance control.

I tend to concur with this. Having recently bought and returned for a refund, a rather expensive Sony Walkman X1000. Kept it for about 3 days. Very disappointed with this player. No gapless playback, no lossless codec support, no Ogg/Vorbis, no games, and worse of all no Rockbox.

Going to keep my first gen Ipod Nano and 80GB 5.5gen Ipod Video going as long as possible, simply because of Rockbox. There is not a current player on the market which has all the codecs, functions, and features that a player loaded with Rockbox has.

I have one of those original DAP's and it still works great... i use it as a backup to my e280v2.  one drawback with the DAP, though: only 512 mb of storage.

I bought a refurbished E260 v1 and although mine has major issues this is probably the only mp3 player that is capable of running an official build rockbox and you can buy with guarantee.

The player I really like to see Rockbox on is Sansa clip v2. It is my favourite mp3 player, because of its small size and sound. It is still available everywhere and it is quite affordable . Would be a great platform for new Rockbox users and could increase popularity of Rockbox.
