Select button not working with Rockbox but okay with orig. software???

4Th gen ipod. just loaded latest stable release and bootloader. did a reset and it comes up into rockbox.  scroll wheel works so i can go up and down the menu list but i can't make a selection. reboot into ipod and it works fine. reboot back into rockbox and problem returns so it seems to have something to do with rockbox.  ran utility to uninstall and did complete reinstall including bootloader. same problem. anyone have any suggestions please?
