ipod 5G error 702 with 12 fails

(1/2) > >>

albinoblackrabbit:
I have recently been given a black 30GB ipod video that has not worked after being dropped.
after charging it and booting it up it said "Connect to computer and use iTunes to restore."
I did this and after booting again it gave me the same massage. I ran an automatic diagnostic test and it gave me a red screen and said "error code 702 with 12 fails."
I also opened the ipod up and saw no obivous damage.
I suspect hard drive damage because it failed after being dropped but does anybody know what error 702 means and if this problem is fixable?

soap:
Google reports next to no info on this error code - are you sure it is "702" and not "102" or some other number?
The one blog post @ the top of Google's results indicates that it is likely not a drive issue.

albinoblackrabbit:
no it is definatly 702.
when I ran the tests again it came out with 131 and 135 as well which also have next to no info.

EDIT:
I used a program called copytran docter to run another diagnostics test and it reports that the hard drive is OK.
I hope it isn't the motherboard, that will be a pain to replace...

EDIT2:

PROBLEM SOLVED!
after some messing around, the ipod is fixed!

albinoblackrabbit:
I have a 5G video ipod that is not restoring and seems to be stuck in recovery mode (restored at least 5 times with no result). I have heard that you can extract the apple firmware from their updater program and install it manually. Is this possible to do and how would I do it? I need to get the apple firmware before I can run Rockbox!

linuxstb:
What do you mean by "recovery mode"?  ipods (or at least, ipods that Rockbox runs on) doesn't have anything known as that.

If they help, instructions for a manual restore using Linux are here:
