Compatibility with car MP3 players

I bought an Ipod 30G video hoping to be able to play flac on my car stereo through the USB port, but the deck just hangs at "searching". Any hope of this ever working? Is it even technologically possible for this to work the way I want it to? Sorry for all of the Noob questions.
