A few Bookmarking suggestions/questions
« on: July 08, 2009, 01:22:39 PM »
Hello everyone. I'm so glad to have found this little world over here.
I recently bought a Sansa c250 and I didn't even use it for a full day before I found Rockbox, and have never looked back. That was a couple weeks ago. Rockbox is infinitely better than the original firmware setup.

Just for reference, I mostly listen to audio-books all day on my player.
I have searched the forums and read the manual on everything I could find regarding bookmarks.
Now on to a few bookmarking ideas:

1) I'd like to be able to resume my audio-books a few seconds or maybe even a minute or two back from where I stopped them. An adjustable amount from a second or two up to maybe 2 minutes

2) This next one is a little hard to describe without rambling... I'd like to be able to keep all the bookmarks that I personally choose to create separate from the ones created by simply stopping the track or powering down the player.
Like this... I'm listening to a book, and I get to a good part that I'd like to refer back to later, so I create a bookmark by holding down the play button on my sansa. No problem.the problem comes in later when I'm trying to find those "good parts" because I also have a bunch of other random bookmarks mixed in there from all the times that I simply power down the player.
Is there a good way to make this work? maybe a "Bookmark to favorites" option where there would be a "favorite bookmarks" folder created somewhere, or Possibly making it so that powering down ONLY puts a bookmark in the recent bookmarks folder and does NOT put one in the in the same folder as the mp3 files (allowing those bookmarks to be only the ones I voluntarily create)

I don't know If I communicated that correctly, but judging by the amount of text i have typed, I'll quit trying.

3) When I use the sleep timer on my sansa, it doesn't appear to create the auto-bookmark that manually powering down normally does. is this fixable?

Thanks very much to everyone who has worked so hard over the years to make Rockbox happen. It certainly made my "marginal at best" player into quite a handy little Swiss army knife.

1) This has been requested before but not sure what the resulting discussion was (there's an entry for it as FS#9126 from when feature requests were still allowed on the tracker). Implementing it would be fairly trivial as long as you didn't expect a bookmark at, say, 0:03 in a track to rewind back into the previous track on resume. Edit: No, wait, it's not trivial, bookmarks are more complicated than I thought. It's still vaguely feasible but it would take some investigation to really work out what the restrictions might be.

2) You can do this already. Set "Bookmark on stop" to "Yes - recent only" and turn on "Maintain a list of recently used bookmarks". If you manually create a bookmark it will get written to a .bmark file next to the mp3 and also to the recent bookmark list, but when they are automatically created they will only be put in the recent bookmark list.

3) This is a bug, FS#2720 - idle or sleep poweroff does not trigger creating a bookmark. There is a patch there but it's very old and may no longer apply to the current code. You can still hit "resume playback" to get back to the point you were at, if you do it immediately, but this will be forgotten if you play anything else first, of course.

Excellent!

The first one was the least important IMO anyway, but it would be handy.

I guess I was wrong about the bookmarking behavior on the second one so that sounds perfect.

...and knowing I can just hit resume for question 3 wraps it all up nicely.

Thanks!
