Compress dynamic range for podcasts in noisy environment?

(1/1)

CCCMikey:
G'day :)

Just considering RockBoxing an iPod video I've acquired.

On my now dead Palm T|X I would deliberately overdrive the preamp with a limiting setting which meant the quiet parts of podcasts would become as loud as the rest of the podcast; making them easier to listen to in the car.

I can't see such a capability in the iPod's firmware, and based on the FAQ it doesn't sound like RockBox has that capability either?

Is there any way to do this with RockBox?

Cheers, Mike.

Didgeridoohan:
Well... It is not a feature of Rockbox yet, but there has been some kind of effort getting it in there. See this thread: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=18129.0

Can't tell you though how it's coming along, since only whoever is working on it (if anyone) knows that.

nerdrunner:
I'll add my vote to request dynamic range compression.  I'd rather not have to preprocess my mp3's for this purpose, because sometimes the background noise is low & wider dynamic range is preferred.

Ideally, if the Rockbox unit has a _microphone_, you can _measure_ the external noise & adjust the volume & dynamic range to match it.  (This idea is taken from TV's which can sense the amount of light in the room & automatically adjust their brightness & contrast to match.  There used to be a program for the Palm Treo that used the builtin camera to measure the amount of ambient light & adjusted the brightness & contrast of the Treo display to match.)

Chronon:
There's already a discussion about this idea as linked by Didgeridoohan.

Locking this now as the question of whether it is a current feature of Rockbox has been answered and a link to discussion about this idea has been provided.
