WAV Playback display / options limited on Jukebox + RB 3.3
« on: July 05, 2009, 08:55:03 PM »
Hi All (1st post).

Have acquired a Jukebox Recorder 10 to use for playback via digital out to separate (hobby) DAC of my domestic audio setup.

I am interested in achieving high quality output so was pleased to discover that RB 3.3 supports WAV playback. I'm a bit old-school and rip most stuff to WAV with EAC (Exact Audio Copy).

However, when playing back WAV files (as opposed to mp3 ones), the machine becomes unresponsive and the usual browsing of RB menus whilst playing is impossible.

And I find that it stops after each WAV track, so to play an album (all tracks in  the same folder) I have to keep getting up to select the next track.

I love the Jukebox but have not experienced 'Love at first sight' with Rock Box as others seem to have. Hopefully it will grow on me.

I would be pleased if there's a solution to this -fingers crossed and thanks in advance for any help.

The Archos Player (and Recorder) are what we call "hwcodec" targets. They have special hardware for decoding the audio, rather than doing it in software.

Though we're able to make this player play WAV, special code has to be loaded into the hardware, the MAS, to do so. Right now this is handled by a plugin, and is not part of the playback system. So, WAV playback is limited to a single file at a time.

If you want a player with digital output that's capable of playing WAV (or, even better, FLAC or other lossless formats) you should look into the H100 series, which have an optical output but decode in software.
