Problems with Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 v2 playing mp3

Hy there,
after reviving my Archos JBR 20 by putting a new rechargeable battery in and installing the latest Rockbox version I get a somewhat strange phenomenon:
I can browse the harddisk, I can create databases and playlists, however I can´t play any mp3-file. It just says ''now playing'' buit the counter isn´t moving at all and there is no sound.
I am at a loss to explain this but perhaps you can and give some advice of getting rid of the problem.

How were the MP3s encoded?

Well I think I used BoncEnc with BladeEncoder to get the MP3.
If I access the harddisk via USB my computer is playing them just fine with VLC.
I didn´t change the files on the hd of the player and they worked just fine prior to the "reviving".
And further on I can see/hear the player accessing the hd but then stopping short of playing.
So I kind of think it a more hardware related problem. (Just my wild guess.)
