what drive in your H1xx or H3xx
unnilennium:
Hello i am considering buying a new drive for my H140, but i am concernedabout the functionality with it.
I know current drive are ZIF and no more 50 pin IDE.
what i want to know is what drive did you manage to install, and did it work with the OF , with rockbox, or with rockbox recompilled with somme options.
for example i am interested in MK1231GAL(120 GB, 5 mm), MK8031GAL (80GB, 5mm), MK2431GAH (240GB, 8mm) or MK1011GAH (100 GB,8mm)
i have heard about some issue about sector size, and that MK1231GAL does not work with some mp3 player, but what about the iriver h serie
thanks
Jean-Philippe

I have a 120GB 8mm MK1214GAH in my H3x0. The Zif adapter, from eBay, is a very tight fit (I'm a bit worried that the pressure will damage the battery), but that disk works flawlessly with the standard version of Rockbox. Some bits of insulating tape were required to prevent shorting in various places, in particular to prevent the connector strip of the Zif cable shorting against the disk casing.
The 120GB is almost full, so I've started thinking about a 160GB or 240GB, but I know that will require compiling Rockbox to get over the 128GB limit in any case - so experimenting with sector sizes too would be acceptable*. However, that's a little way off at present; it would also be a pain if there was a hardware restriction that prevented it working...
In another thread there is a link to a new adapter that fits OK in the H100 series (but is still just too long for the H300 series).
* Er, perhaps... on reflection, if it requires a modified boot loader, with the prospect of bricking the player, I might have to call for help!

At least, mk8025gal, mk1214gah, mk1011gah will work perfect on h1x0, h3x0. These hdd have 512byte physical sector, so don'y have compatable problem. I use mk8025gal with gigabeat s30 but, this hdd worked perfectly on my h140.
And, on rockbox, some people use mk2431gah. mk2431gah and mk1231gal will not work on original h1x0 and h3x0 firmware, but they work with rockbox(need to use modified bootloader).
Oh, "new" zif convertor work perfectly with 8mm zif hdd(no tight fit).

The largest drive I have in an iriver is the 80GB Toshiba MK8007GAH. It is a 50-pin PATA drive that can be directly swapped for the original equipment 40GB MK4004GAH in the iriver H340.
You can still buy them on eBay for $125-$200, typically used, typically salvaged from a laptop. You should expect that these hard drives will have been formatted in NTFS (for Windows XP), so you will need to reformat them into FAT32.
I like it because it is a simple, reliable upgrade that fits perfectly, requiring no adaptors. If only I could get a 120GB 50-pin PATA Toshiba drive with 512-bytes per sector, but alas, they do not make them.
