Allow for targets to be used at different angles
« on: May 25, 2009, 03:13:22 PM »
This could allow people to hold devices sideways, possibly making better use of screen space. Basically this would be rotating the screen 90 degrees and remapping the keypad. The direction of rotation could be specified so lefties could get along with the rest of us.

We've basically ruled out this feature in the past because it would change the screen's physical dimensions in run-time and thus we would have to code everything everywhere to use a dynamic size. Lots of code changes, more code, slower code. For a very minor feature IMHO.

I will admit that I used and enjoyed this patch (90 degree screen rotation) for the Gigabeat some time ago.  That patch was rejected for going about things in the wrong way.  Is there considered to be any right way or it really a No-Do now?

If it was closed for doing it the wrong way, *usually* it's explained why it's the wrong way as well in the closing.

For screen rotation, I'd imagine it'd need to be dynamic, an option that can be turned on and off at will.

That's correct.  Here's a quote:
Quote
Choosing an alternate build as the method for screen rotation is not a desired feature in SVN Rockbox.

It seems this task is not interested in working toward runtime Rotation, or even boot-time Rotation with a single build.
