iPod 5G formely 30gb now 80gb - problem with transfer speed
« on: June 09, 2009, 06:10:10 AM »
 Hello,
I'm new to these forums and new to Rockbox:)

I have installed a new Samsung HS081HA 80Gb hard drive in my formely 30gb iPod video 5G. I was able to install Rockbox and Itunes, music plays fine, but transfer speeds are simply painful now. I do not know how to measure Itunes speed of transfer, but Windows Commander showed me 260 KB/sec when I attempted to transfer some files to play through Rockbox. Itunes is seemingly at similar speed level too. One guy on Head-fi reported on being able to achieve 11mb/sec on his IDENTICAL setup to mine by using (these forums) Rmaniac's "monster build" rockbox. I followed rmaniac's instructions and was able to install rockbox (it would not run beforehand), but transfer speeds remained abysmal...

Could anyone help me?

We do not provide support with unsupported builds. If you're having issues with rmaniac's build, or if you're having issues with the original firmware, please contact rmaniac or Apple respectively.

First, deep six the other Rockbox build for now.  Next, how did you get the 80gb drive in a 30gb case without some additional explosive forming?  Or isn't the Samsung drive double depth?  Now, fiddling with all this hard drive equipment with the attendant stress on the ZIF ribbon cable is bound to get you a bad cable/mainboard connector.  I have a couple of these now that were fine a couple of weeks ago when I first got into repairs, that don't work now from rough handling.  The cable also has to be aligned almost perfectly when the tub gets squeezed back on or it won't work properly.  This also means, and this is IMPORTANT, the ZIF connector on the Samsung replacement must be in exactly the same linear position (dead center) as the old Toshiba, or it won't work without some deft packing mods.  This is a problem with a 40g Hitachi available on eBay that I'm using.
3) You have a bad hard drive.

Thanks for the answer, Mason,

"First, deep six the other Rockbox build for now"- what does the phrase "deep six" mean? Sorry, English is not my native tongue...

The Head-fi guy actually has not yet responded to my quires, so I'm kinda doubting his veridity atm...

The Samsung drive fitted without any modifications as it has identical ZIF connector and is also 5mm single platter form factor. I'm pretty sure the connection is fine too as I have plugged it in several times while doing an iMod mod on my ipod (always same result, original 30gb HD still functions at above 10mb/s speed)...
I'm really pretty miffed with this HD right now- i cant even enjoy my imod to the full :(

Coincidentally, I also encountered that phrase for the first time today!

To "deep six" is to kill off. As in "six feet underground", or the depth to which undertakers dig graves.

Don't worry - I'm British and had no idea what that phrase meant :)

Ok, sorry to repeat this from my other post in another thread, but I want to paste it here for completeness...

MEGA thanks to nugged and Chronon for the tip, the transfer rates have improved drastically!

But, now its really wierd- with "optimize for performance" and "disc caching"  selected (Go to device manager>disk drives>right click “apple ipod”>PROPERTIES>policies> and check “maximum performance” and “use caching”)the disc caching option deselects itslef and goes gray... The transfer speeds are then 5-10MB/s for the INITIAL 1-3 seconds of ALL subsequent file transfers and then drop to consistent 1mb/s(with occasional speed up 3/4 way through the transfer). So basically I can transfer 1-2 songs at a time at full speed, but if I transfer more files in one go - speed drops...

Pretty strange, huh?
