iPod Video: Cannot control with Honda iPod connection
« on: June 03, 2009, 03:10:24 AM »
Hi all,

This is my first post.  I believe that it belongs here, but please move it if not.

My wife had an iPod Video that she thought was stolen.  I bought her a Nano after it didn't show up for a while.  When she found the old one, I inherited it, and I installed the latest Rockbox on it.

Before the iPod was lost, we had an iPod connection installed in our Honda Pilot.  There is a cable that goes into the glove compartment, which connects to the iPod.  Because of the strange timing of all of this, we have never previously tested the iPod connection.  I was told that control of the iPod would be limited, so my hopes weren't that high.  However, I finally tested out the connection today, and I cannot get anything to happen at all.  I select the inputs that I think it could possibly be, and despite the iPod indicating that it is playing music, there is no sound whatsoever.

I saw that there was a "Car Adapter Mode" setting, but after reading the manual, this doesn't seem to have much application, and I have already tried turning it on.

So, does anyone have any experience or guesses as to what my problem might be.  My next step will be to try the Nano to see if I get the same result (it does not have Rockbox on it...yet), but it doesn't even have any music loaded on it yet (sad, I know).

Also, at the moment, booting to the regular apple firmware wouldn't be very helpful, since I only have FLAC format files on the iPod Video, and so I would presume I would have no luck there.

Sorry for being long-winded.  Thanks, in advance.

Update:  I just tried my wife's nano in the Honda, and everything works fine (although I seem to be stuck with a pretty lame excuse for music navigation).  So, that certainly would lead me to believe that it is a rockbox issue.

As for the link that was posted above, I assume that you are just directing me to the general language that many devices that connect to the dock connector will not work properly?  If so, I guess that is a partial answer.  I certainly did not see anything relating to any Honda products (I guess I am not sure who makes the factory head unit, but nonetheless, I don't think that is is addressed there).

I guess if this is the case, I may have to go back to the regular firmware, as this would be the primary use I have for the iPod.  Oh well.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Thank you.

The support for the iPod accessory protocol is not comprehensive.  That page shows a range of devices that are supported to varying degrees in Rockbox.

You can always sync as much music as you like through iTunes for use with the Apple firmware if you so desire.  Rockbox doesn't take up much room and you could always keep it around for those times when you don't need to use your iPod with this accessory.  Rockbox does play ALAC, so if you want to convert the FLAC to ALAC then this should play fine in both Apple's firmware and Rockbox.

It would be helpful to add information about your particular head unit to that page for other users' benefit.
