bmw i-drive/ipod interface
« on: May 24, 2009, 08:19:21 PM »
Hi

Did a search for this and there didn't seem any previous postings so;

Has anyone any experience or can give me an educated guess as to whether the later BMW's that come with a USB will work with Rockbox? They advertise them as being designed for ipods and controllable through the screen via the i-drive. I'm thinking of buying one and don't want to waste time looking for one specifically with a USB, if it'll never work. Older models all have a mini jack-in but it would be pretty cool to be able to contol it from the screen.

Thanks

p.s. Would rather not bother with the car than have to use apple software! Thanks for Rockbox its fantastic.

If its not on the wiki page for the ipod accessory protocol, or the file spray task, then I'd guess no one has tested it.

I got one just today and guess what it seems to work only in OF with Sansa e250. At the time I plug the player, this one reboots to the OF and resume playing where I left it. Same thing if I turn off the car, the player boots back to Rockbox and shutdown after idle timeout. When I open the car, the player reboots gain to OF and pauses at the last song until I turn the radio on or insert the car key which resumes the song.

I am using last Rockbox stable version 3.2 and I thought that the car adapter mode should avoid the player to reboot to OF. Really need to stay in Rockbox to be able to use the music on the sdhc card.

I also seen some posts talking about the car adapter mode broken since 3.1! Is it the case and should I install older versions to make the player stay in Rockbox?

By the way, the adapter with i-drive or radio  control works like a charm with OF!

Edit:

Installed the today build r21133 after I have seen that an usb mode exist now since one month and I can say that the BMW ipod adapter works great with Rockbox and this one does not reboot anymore to OF. Very happy and thanks to all the developpers!
