Rockbox wont play all my songs
« on: May 24, 2009, 02:37:42 PM »
I am sorry if this question has been asked before, but after i installed rockbox on my mp3 player, some of the songs wont play.

they show up in the files menu, but they wont play.

the thing is, i burned a lot of them onto my laptop using windows media player a few years ago, so it is a possibility that it is a dmr issue, even though it seems to me like a "selective" dmr issue.

For example, i like ac/dc, have eight of their albums saved, but rockbox will only play six, the two that it wont play are highway to hell and back in black.

however, there are other artists, another example being metallica, you cant paly some of the songs on kill em all, but you can play the black album, which is a lot more successful commercially.

after you try to play one of these "blacklisted" albums, i an unable to play any other music, having to turn the mp3 player off.

i installed rockbox first, had the above mentioned problems, uninstalled it, renistalled it, got the same problems.

i would appreciate it if somebody could give me a bit of advice.

my mp3 player is a sansa sandisk e280 v1.

Can you tell us anything about the files that don't play?  Like what format they are?

Can you convert then to another format?

I'd rather track down the problem than avoid it.  :)

If he can't convert them to another format, then, it is more than likely a DRM issue.

Odd distribution of DRM (he seems to be saying he can play some of 'Kill Them All') - and odd behavior it is causing Rockbox.

I'm guessing that the files are not MP3's but some version of WMA which is the WMP default.  The OF will play protected-WMA, Rockbox won't.

I dig that, but I find it odd that some songs in an album would be thus, while others are not.
I also would like to know why a protected WMA would prevent Rockbox from playing later tracks.

We don't know if they were all Synced at the same time, or the protection schemes of those groups.

I'm a Horse and not a Zebra when it comes to Rockbox code, buy, DRM crashes normally involve the handling of the DRM error code.

The protection scheme used shouldn't really matter. They'll either play, or they won't.

I have no idea what you're trying to say here :(

We don't have a "DRM Error Code". DRM encumbered music just looks like corrupt files to Rockbox.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Edit:  I just thought of something.

Try bringing up the file on your player in Explorer, right click and go to Properties,  check to see if it is "Protected" and also that it has some size and Play length listed.

Just because I was intrigued, I looked up what "horse not zebra" meant and it seems to be on the same lines as Occam's Razor:

"The phrase that gets drilled into the minds of physicians-in-training during medical school:

“When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.”

In the medical community, the term “zebra” is commonly and universally understood as a reference to a rare disease or condition. Physicians are taught to assume that the simplest explanation is usually the best, so as not to go around diagnosing patients with all sorts of exotic illnesses that are highly unlikely. Common diseases are what physicians should expect to encounter."

Apologies for hijacking the thread.
