Someone can please send me an Ipod´s 4th system files?
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:30:16 PM »
Hey there,

A friend of mine formatted my Ipod using Windows (right click on device, format option). Since then, it doesn't show up on my PC anymore, nor on iTunes. It doesn't enter Disk Mode either. I did a reset and entered diagnostic mode normally, I did all the tests available succesfully (kind of, as some tests shows crypt numbers; don´t know what they mean). Since it doesn't show up on PC, I can´t restore using iTunes. I took it´s HD off and connected on my PC (with a CF adapter), and it shows up as a normal HD, with 38Gb free. When I turn it on, it only shows a "recharge on wall" icon. I tried to let it an entire night charging, but to no avail. So I came up with this idea: someone out there that has a 4th Ipod Classic can search and find the system files and send me them?

Thx in advance.

There are no required files on the iPod. The firmware is stored in a separate partition. If iTunes is refusing to restore this partition for you, you need to contact Apple for further support.

As well, our forum guidelines ask that you attempt to use real words, and avoid things such as "thx" which may cause problems for automatic translation software.

I googled until get nuts, but can't find any way to restore my Ipod using other means than iTunes or Windows (both don´t recognize it). There is no Apple Customer Service where I live (Brazil), so if I can´t get it working on my own, I´ll have to dispose it as trash.

So, I ask again, is there a way to restore my firmware (90% sure it´s the the root of the problem) without using iTunes or any OS?

I mean, there are ways to force some dead MP3 players (that even won´t turn on anymore) to enter disk, recovery or emergency mode and be recognized by Windows short-circuiting their memory chip. Perhaps the same thing can be done with an Ipod?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, but you seem to have been claiming that it doesn't work. Did you follow these instructions?

Yes, it doesn´t. When I try to enter disk mode (by selecting "disk mode" option on diagnostic mode), it just resets and the same "plug in wall power outlet" icon reappears. It´s the only thing that appears on the screen, along with "low battery" icon when I let it a full day out of a power source. Once it is recharged (by either USB or wall power), the "plug in wall power outlet" icon appears again. That´s frustating. When I removed it´s HD and powered it on, a "folder with a exclamation mark" icon showed up.

Perhaps there is a way to shortcircuit it... someone has ever tried this before?

Thanks.

That's discouraging.

You aren't likely to fix much of anything by randomly short circuiting things on your player's circuit board.  There are proper ways (such as JTAG) for writing to a corrupted flash ROM.  Unfortunately, these usually involve special equipment.

Doing something like formatting your player's drive shouldn't cause any problems like this.  Are you sure someone didn't attempt an update/restore and disconnect at the wrong time?
