max capacity in Rockbox for ipod photo hard drive upgrade?
« on: May 21, 2009, 06:16:42 PM »
Hello--I hope I'm posting to the correct topic.

I would like to upgrade the hard drive in my 20gb ipod photo to 60gb.  It occured to me to check for any issues, since I plan to use Rockbox exclusively and not itunes.

Does anyone know of any Rockbox reason I should not upgrade?  Thanks!

you may want to check if it is the same thickness as your old one ; if it is thicker you will need a different backplate

Thanks, froggyman.  I didn't know that you could change the thickness just by swapping backplates.

It just occurred to me that my question should probably go in "Database"

Thanks again.

you wont have any problems with the DB or with rockbox assuming you dont go over 137GiB.

you would need a biggr backplate though if the drive is thicker

assuming you dont go over 137GiB.

It's 128GiB, which is approximately 137GB.

I have recently installed Rockbox on my 60Gb iPod colour. I tested it with a few songs and it seemed to perform well. When I transferred the rest of my 55Gb music collection on to it performance dropped dramatically. Changing from one menu to the next or going back from playing a song took a long time, maybe 10/15 seconds, which is quite frustrating.

I'm not sure if this is something to do with my iPod or with the Rockbox firmware but just thought I would let you know my experiences.

catnap: Play with directory cache and loading the database to RAM.  This avoids having to spin up the disk every time you want to browse.

Correct me if I am wrong but these parameters are only valid if you use the Database function. It is not used for the File browsing (which I use). Or is that not the case?

The directory cache is still applicable.

It's as cool_walking_ says.  I mentioned both since I didn't know how you were browsing.

I switched on dir cache. I can't believe how much faster it is. Thanks guys.

Now I need to work out how to get it to charge, but that's another story.
