database doesn't change
« on: May 17, 2009, 02:06:01 AM »
Today I deleted my music files from ipod_control (some were corrupted) and put fresh ones in my Music folder.  But when I try to update or initialize my database, I get my old one.  I've even deleted my database_ .tcd files, but I still get the same database.

The process isn't freezing/choking, and I can feel the hard drive whirring for a few minutes.

Is there anything I haven't tried yet?  This is an ipod photo, 20gb.

Thanks!

Check System > Debug > View Database Info > Progress
It should show 100% and the number of entries in the database.

Yipes!  It says 0% and 0 entries.  But two or three times now I've rebooted to commit the database.

I just realized that I did not delete the music on ipod_contoller via itunes.  (I got a new hard drive and started from scratch, and I was happy never to have itunes on my computer again.)

I just checked booting in itunes (or whatever the original firmware on the actual ipod is called).  The album list there stayed the same.  I wonder if Inititialize and Update Database work from that list, rather than whether the files actually exist.

Thanks for your rapid response, by the way!

No, the database works on what files actually exist.  Rockbox doesn't pay any attention to any itunes stuff - Rockbox works on many more players than just ipods :)

What could be happening is that when you deleted the files, Windows put them in a recycle bin on the driver, and therefore the files are still there.  Try checking for this - perhaps the disktidy plugin could help.

Thanks--I removed the old music files and tried again.  This time, the Database Info shows -1% progress and ends up with a lot more entries than I have files (3332 vs. 2795).

I don't mind re-installing Rockbox and starting over, even if I have to reload all my music (I only have about 10GB).  Would this be recommended?
