Optimizing RockBoy for music playback.
« on: May 15, 2009, 05:05:08 AM »
I've got a Toshiba Gigabeat F40, and rockboy works great, the only thing I wish It could do is the ability to playback music while the plugin is running.

Is there any way to optimize anything on the player to allow this to happen?

I tried setting the screen to unscaled on rockboy (and of course disabling sound) but it still returns an error as not enough memory.

Is there anything else possible to do to allow this to happen?

i think it depends on the complexity of the games you're playing (i.e. how much data has to be written to the buffer). tetris for example runs fine with music in the background.

In Rockboy's case, the plugin buffer needs to fit not only the emulator itself, but also the rom image.  I think the plugin buffer is only 512KiB, which means most games can't fit, and so Rockboy steals the RAM which is normally used for music playback (meaning of course that you can't do any while you're running Rockboy like this).

One thing you can do is to compile your own custom build with a larger size for the plugin buffer.  I don't know how to do that, but it sounds easy... :P

One thing I found particularly annoying is that the US version of Monopoly works with music playing (on the Gigabeat F) but the EU one doesn't, presumably as it has more languages in it.

I find part of the fun of Monopoly in knowing the street names, and I don't for the US version! Booooo.

Hmm, I didn't know that.

Now I've got to try more games.
