Sansa E280 questions when connected to speaker system
« on: May 14, 2009, 03:10:16 PM »
Hello All,

I have really enjoyed Roxbox since installing a few months ago.

When I plug the Sansa into my  Sansa specific speaker system (Altec Lansing In Motion - IM413) I am having some trouble.

First, it reverts back and loads the original sansa interface, which is fine, but the problem is, less then HALF of the music files that are on my Sansa show up under the "Music" section. (however, when I look at the memory usage through the original interface under the "settings" section, it shows that the amount of memory used is correct ??)

What gives?  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I also notice problems with my sansa synching with windows media player after it has reverted back to the original sansa interface.

Thanks!!!

Any problems you have with your sansa whilst it's running its original firmware are by definition not rockbox problems, so you're asking in the wrong place I'm afraid.

Well, it's interesting that I never had this problem before I installed Rockbox, eh?  ;)

Not being a wisea**  but if it isn't Rockbox related, why did this never happen before rockbox was installed?

All the music files are shown when Rockbox interface is loaded, but not when the original interface is run.

So, the files are on there somewhere.

What version of Rockbox are you using?  Did you add files while you had Rockbox installed?  (Rockbox disables database refreshing when it launches the OF for USB mode in builds prior to native USB support.)  Have you updated the original firmware's database since adding files?  Are any of the files supported by Rockbox, but not by the original firmware?

Thanks, Chronon.

I am using version 5.0 of Rockbox.  Yes, I have added many files since installing Rockbox.  (However, even ones that I added before installing Rockbox are not showing up under original firmware).  I didn't know there was a way to update the OF database?  All files should be supported by rockbox  and the original firmware as they are standard mp3 files, all ripped and stored in the same manner.  It seems really random which files are showing up in the OF and which are not.  Some are showing up that I put on there when I first got the Sansa (and didn't have rockbox)  and some are showing up that I have very recently added (with rockbox installed.)

Thanks again for attempting to help me out. And please excuse my limited technical expertise...!  :)

There isn't a version 5.0 of Rockbox. Please double check which version you're using.

Are the files on an external SDHC card which the OF doesn't support ?

Sorry, that was boot loader version 5.0.

Ok, Rockbox version is:  r19569-081223.

All files are on internal flash memory, I have no external card.

If you're sure that there are songs missing that were in the database previously then it sounds like a problem with the OF's database -- not simply a long time since the last OF database update.  I don't see a reason to suspect that Rockbox would cause a problem with the OF's database.

My guess is that some of the file were loaded using the Sansa in the MTP mode and some of the file are loaded using the MSC (never sure of this spelling) mode, the only mode Rockbox uses.  What happens if you start your player first and then dock it.

The remote features of my Timex dock don't work in Rockbox mode, and they even required a Sansa firmware update to work well while running the Sansa firmware.  Thus all said I can dock and use either firmware or connect to the headphone jack.

Thanks for the help.

I am sure that there are songs missing.  When I load the OF, it shows 700 +/- songs, when I load Rockbox, there are 1200+ songs.  But, when I check the memory usage, both OF and Rockbox show the same amount used!  Weird.

Typically, when I dock it, it begins to load rockbox then automatically switches to the OF.  However, one time last night, it actually stayed with rockbox while docked.  (naturally the "skip" function on the remote wouldnt work, but that's a small price to pay to actually have access to ALL my tunes!)

So, looks like I am in the same boat as you, BruceHP.  Good call on updating the sansa firmware.  Will try that and see what happens.

I think I figured out the problem.  With the Sansa plugged into my puter, I went to My Computer, then to the Sansa drive.  Most of the folders in the sansa drive were "hidden".  I selected all and "Un-hid" them. I then disconnected the sansa, turned it off and then back on.  Next time I rebooted the Sansa in OF, it updated the directory automatically.  All the music files are now shown in OF mode!  So, it should work fine with the dock now.

Just thought I would update - as maybe this info will help somebody else!
