iPod 30gb 5.5 video with 40gb Hitachi HD eplacement
« on: May 12, 2009, 09:17:33 PM »
I'm kinda new at this, but I hope this is the right place for it.

I acquired an iPod 5.5 video (V9M) with a bad 30g hard drive.  Trying a 30gb ZIF connector Hitachi from a Dell Jukebox showed that it worked, but the connector was too offset to allow the drive to fit into the case.

EBay has a vendor for a 40gb Hitachi that shows the ZIF connector in the right place for $2 less than any of the 30gb Toshibas offered, so I went for one.  Now it's installed, and I installed Rockbox in using the 30gb version.  Is this the right one to use?  What's the difference in the 60/80gb versions besides perhaps the battery life calculator?

Everything seems to work great, and I'm sold over what limited use of the iTunes environment I had, except that without warning it simply goes off.  Doesn't seem to matter what menu I'm in.  A hard reset brings it back, so I'm curious to find out if it's hard disc related.  I wouldn't think HD capacity would be version dependent, but I'm not a developer of this type of software.

Any help would be very appreciated.

The difference is that the 60/80GB iPods have twice the physical memory as the 30GB, so the 30GB build is still correct.  Even if you put in a 60 or 80GB drive, you'd use the 30GB build, as that's what your model originally was.

Thanks for the information.  It would seem, then, that putting a 40gb hard drive in a 60/80gb box wouldn't be a problem, only that the additional buffer space would result in fewer and longer hard drive accesses, which should add to battery life.
