Rockbox not visible on my PC or Mac when connected via USB!
« on: May 12, 2009, 02:59:51 PM »
Hello - I have just successfully installed Rockbox on my (old) 3G IPOD.  Here's my question:  when I connect the IPOD via a USB cable, it does not appear on my PC and/or MAC.  It was my impression that the unit should show up in Explorer/Finder as a separate drive.   What am I missing?   >:(

According to this: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/TargetStatus USB doesn't work on the 3rd gen iPod.  Perhaps you have to boot into the Apple OS before making a connection?

it has to be in disk mode, and you have to enable disk mode through iTunes

How do I enable disk mode?    After that, is it simply a question of copying files and then rebooting?

How do I enable disk mode?

connect in the OF open itunes, go to the device page, then on the summary page check "enable disk mode" then simply resync with that setting

Sorry, (newbie here!) - if I do as you suggest does that mean I'll always be in disk mode when connected via USB?

Update - I managed to boot up ipod in disk mode, copied some folders over, so at least that works.  Still, using 3G in this manner is rather tedious...

Ideally, Rockbox should be able to detect the USB insertion and automatically reboot into Apple's disk mode.  Does this not work for you?

No - I can go into disk mode by pressing FF + REW keys simultaneously, but it does not automatically enter disk mode when a usb is attached (no volume in Finder).

Okay.  I'm really not familiar with the 3g iPods so I don't know if this is expected behavior or not.  For now I guess you need to manually boot into Disk Mode to get USB access.
