Ipod 120gb on Rockbox
« on: May 12, 2009, 02:04:52 PM »
I recently heard about Rockbox from my college teacher, and decided to try it on my Ipod classic 30gb. It seems like a really good program but, unfortunately, my Ipod got stolen at a college party not long ago  :( So, now theres only the 120gb classic left in stores etc, i looked on the current build and it had 80gb but no 120gb. I was just wondering if Rockbox is compatible with it, because i would really like to install it again as what i used of the program seemed really good.

Hopefully i'm not repeating anything, cheers  :)

It's worth pointing out that the "Classic" was never available in a 30GB format.

The player that Apple refer to as the Classic is the sixth generation iPod. All previous generations are not classic, but have other names :

1st Generation iPod
2nd Generation iPod
3rd Generation iPod
4th Generation iPod
iPod Color / Photo
5th and 5.5th Generation iPod (or Video iPod).

Would it be a lengthy task to get a Classic-compatible build out? I'm just looking for a new player, and an iPod Classic would be a strong contender if I could RockBox it straight away!

No ETAs, ever.  Someone could turn up and do the work (but even then it'd take a while), or nobody might ever bother to do it.

Ta. It was the taking a while thing I was after :) Just so I know if a port ever did appear it wouldn't be any time soon. Just clarifies a bit what I shouldn't look at when considering new hardware.

There are plenty of Rockbox capable players available on places like ebay though.

You may even get a new older model from someone selling off old stock.

There is always the discontinued iPod 5.5G.  Plenty of used units are available, cosmetic and other parts are plentiful that can make it look and work like new.  If one knew where to look a like-new 5.5G could probably be built from available parts.  Rockbox runs great (in my opinion) and sounds great with it.

I've just ordered a 240GB drive so a Rockbox "monster build" will be used soon!
