Codec Failure?
« on: May 07, 2009, 09:21:08 PM »
I have an iPod Video 30GB, with a SVN build only one week old (havent been able to test a current one, though I imagine I would get the same results)

When I play through Artists with the Database feature occasionly (maybe every 25 songs) I will come across a song that will display "CODEC FAILURE" and then skip that song and go to the next. This seems to happen most when I skip around from song to song, without listening to the entire thing. My songs range from 128KBs to 320KBs AAC music files. I havent however noticed any pattern on certain songs that always get the codec error, as I can play the songs that get skipped by them self, but cant by pressing the RW button.

Any ideas?

1) Test an updated build, because we always ask that you use a current one. "I imagine I would get the same results" really isn't good enough.

2) Come up with as reliable a way to reproduce this as possible, and post a proper bug report with directions for others to try it so that the people interested in fixing it can see it first hand. If nobody else can duplicate it, it's much less likely anyone can ever fix it.

Hi everybody!
I'm also experiencing "codec failure" on my iPod 5G 80GB. It normally occurs when I skip tracks during playback. E.g. when I skip the track after 5-10 seconds of listening and move to another one, codec fails on 5th or 6th song. Sometimes I get unknown codepage so the symbols are unreadable. It makes no difference whether it is mp3 or FLAC. Sometimes the playback just stops and when I'm trying to resume it, I feel the HD is doing the search, but the playback doesn't start (it occurs after 1,5-2hr or so of playback).
It all began when I updated to RockBox 3.2 (or 3.1, I don't remember exactly), I've tried numerous builds since 3.2 was released, now I decided to uninstall RB completely and put the fresh installation of 3.2 including new bootloader. Unfortunately nothing helps, I still get codec failure.

Does it happen with the current SVN build?

It happens nearly with every build, I'll try to download current build, but smth is telling me that this won't work

upd to my previous post: I've installed RB 3.3 build, not 3.2

Current builds: http://build.rockbox.org/ are not the most recent stable versions (like 3.3 is ATM):
"These builds are provided fresh after every source code change."
Please try with the relevant _current_ build.

And again, with current SVN (r21634) build I got "codec failure" message. It happened when I was playing FLAC and tried to switch the folder

Have you tried using a 30GB build instead?

If this will help, I'll try. I've missed the discussion on using 30Gb build instead of regular 60/80Gb. Could you please explain the advantages? Why everything was just fine on older builds of 60/80Gb firmwares?

Also, once you've tested, could you give the most exact formula for reproducing you can? See if you can find a way to make it happen every time, then describe exactly what setup triggers it.

Finally I've tried 30Gb build. Nothing helps, I still get codec failure and what happens more and more - playback just stops and I cannot resume it. It used to happen before, the playback just stops, I try to load another file, but this is not working. Playback stop usually occurs when FLAC is playing, codec failure I can get on any type of file. Could it be because of free space on HDD? I have only 300-500Mb free.
