General Problems with using RockBox- really slow- often jams
« on: May 07, 2009, 05:25:08 AM »
Just wanted to know whether there is something I can do to fix this. Rockbox often takes a while to play once a file has been selected for playing i.e. in file view. My ipod (5G Video 80GB) often freezes on the wps and can take up to a minute to actually start playing. I usually compound the problem by pressing play then pause then play ... trying to get it to start playing. However even when I am disciplined and wait patiently it can still take ages to work!!! Is this behaviour normal for RockBox??

I really want to use Rockbox as my firmware but I don;t think I can put up with these delays and freezes.

Any suggestions?

And by "a minute" do you mean a literal 60 seconds? Have you tried resetting the settings to default?

Slowness and jamming are indicators that you have a stoner on your hands.  Don't panic, because stoner rock is awesome music.

With my iPod Video, I noticed a delay and disk spinning when playing the first song after booting, or when I suddenly "play" a file that wasn't in the playlist, but this was probably 2 seconds at most, and generally much less (although I never felt the need to time it).

Thanks for the tip cool_walking_ however while slow and jam can be alright on their on within a track there is nothing worse than the old slow-jam combo on the dancefloor. If I was listening to slow-jam I think my ipod is prob in the throes of giving up on life...

Thanks Llorean I've just reset to see how that goes... and yip it was taking up to a minute to play sometimes!

like cool_walking_ said (thourgh the noise), it shouldnt take more than 2 or 3 seconds at worst... have you got dircache enabled? try disabling it.. that will force the disk to be spining when you are browsing... if that doesnt help then it could be you need to scandisk the drive, or defrag, or its just dead?

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.
