I'm really stumped.  Unless you have an iPod Mini, not Nano I can not think of a scenario under which you would encounter these symptoms.

Do the buttons work, but not the "wheel"?

Please double check http://www.ipodlinux.org/wiki/Generations so we're 100% on the same page.

EDIT:  Actually - the easiest way is to ask:  Is your screen color or black and white?
