Nobody is working on it, so I won't call that progress. See the New Ports forums -- all progress is there.
Regardless, Rockbox Utility should have given you a hint about an unsupported player variant when using autodetection. Did that not work for you?

It did.
In fact, my friend said he thought it was an ipod video (he got this player second hand). So, not really knowing different ipod models, I posted a message on the forum.
