Big Issues on ipod 30gb 5th generation
« on: May 01, 2009, 08:42:26 AM »

Hi, I have some big issues with the installation of rockbox on my ipod video 30gb 5th generation.

I've installed rockbox because nearly every time my ipod enter in deep sleep (I don't use it for about 12hours) the ipod gets corrupted and I need iTunes to restore it (sometimes the ipod restart to work by forcing the reboot it, but very rarely, usually it returns the error message).
I installed rockbox to avoid this problem, but the error sometimes comes out again (less often than with the ipod firmware).

More, when I try to initialize the database, afet the rebooting needed(I shut down rockbox by pressing the play/pause button) the database won't be recognized and I nedd to re-inizialize the database( but the error comes out again), the Ipod doesn't retun any error message, simply seems the database has'nt be initialized yet. After many and many tries finally it works, but not for too long time :(

The last but not least problem is the corruption of the rockbox files. After 3-4 time I  turn on the Ipod, rockbox get corrupted, the setting are lost(also theme settings), and the database get lost.
I entered in disk mode into the ipod and I saw some of the rockbox folders have some exclamation point("!") at the end of the folder name, and I can't erase it (windows returns a corrupted files error).

I'm sorry for my bad englis...
Thank you for every useful reply

The hard drive inside your iPod may be failing. Have you tried running checkdisk on it?

That sounds like your hard drive's filesystem is corrupted, so you should probably examine it and fix any errors.

Open the Command Prompt in Windows, and type "chkdsk /f X:" (without the quotes, and replace X: with whatever drive letter your iPod is). That should help repair any errors in the filesystem.

But it could also be a sign of a dying drive, as evilnick mentioned.

I've tried to run a scandisk utility from windows, it's the same as chkdisk?

Also I've formatted the drive more than once.
It's better to run also a chkdsk?

I've run a SMART check from the ipod debug menu, and everything was ok, I hope my drive isn't dying... :-(

chkdsk is thought to be better than scandisk, I'd try that as well.

ok thanks.
I've tried chkdisk and effectively there were some errors... I'll try the ipod now. I hope now it's everyting ok...

thank you very much!!

you're doing a great job! I've tried rockbox in my Ipod, some years ago, when it was still under develomepent and there wasn't a stable release yet.
now there are some very interesting implementation, I think now it's better than ipod original firmware
