TTS Set-up
« on: April 30, 2009, 07:15:34 PM »
Is there a problem with the set-up of TTS in the latest version of rbutil 1.12.1?

None that I know of. Why are you asking?

Besides, there is no version 1.12.1 of Rockbox Utility.

It works fine for me.

If you really want to report a bug and are not trolling around you should make yourself familiar with the information needed to properly report an issue. For example, nobody has an idea about
- which OS you are using
- which TTS you are using
- what steps you are performing to get it "broken".

I highly doubt that the TTS setup is broken in 1.2.1 because it wasn't changed for a while. A bug report is absolutely useless if it doesn't contain a detailed description what behaviour you are seeing, what you are expecting and how to reproduce this issue. Now please start thinking in the first place (just calling something broken isn't a bit), put in the details that are needed to reproduce your issue or I'll lock this thread as it doesn't serve any purpose right now. Also, the proper place for reporting bugs (if you really want to report a bug) is the tracker. These are the forums.

No problem, I reverted to version 1.2 and will just wait for the update.

Note that he said it works fine for him. If the only person experiencing the bug is you, and you're not willing to provide any more information, it's never going to be fixed.

After trying to help and getting flamed, I decided it was my problem which I solved by reverting to the last working version 1.2, my standard SOP.

If version 1.2.1 will truly populate the voice select box in the TTS  configuration screen, then it truly is my problem, but, I have give all of this information above..   and can't be of further help.

BruceHP, reporting bugs does help and is an important way to contribute for those of us who don't write code.  However, you should understand that if you simply say that something is broken without providing details then there really isn't much that a developer can do if they check your report and everything works on their end.  In my opinion, the important point to take away from bluebrother's last post is that there are generally a number of factors that could contribute to a given problem that other people don't have any ideas about (and which you still didn't describe in this particular case).

It's fine to discuss problems that you experience on the forums before filing a bug report (to see if others experience the same problem, which factors might be relevant, etc.).  Just don't expect that developers will act on a forum topic.  The bug tracker keeps all active bug reports organized and easily searchable and is the proper place for a bug report.

After trying to help and getting flamed
I'd rather call that "after trolling around and getting flamed". Seriously, just whining that something is broken without giving any useful details isn't "trying to help" at all.

I've asked several questions about the problem and you haven't answered any of them. If you're that unwilling to give out any details, why do you expect to (a) not getting flamed and (b) someone to be able doing anything about your issue?

I guess I got off on the wrong foot on this one, I'll try harder.

- which OS you are using
XP SP3 fully updated, Sansa e260, Zoomtext screen reader, Rockbox daily build

- which TTS you are using
MS Sapi 5.1, NeoSpeech voice VW Paul

- what steps you are performing to get it "broken".
DLed rbutil 1.2.1, it started fine, tried to create some talk files, halted on the third line giving me a configuration error, fourth line also, went to TTS configuration screen, no voices are populated in the arrow down voice configuration box.

Returned to 1.2, all seven of my voices are listed in the configuration box, and they work.

DLed a new version of 1.2.1 after clearing my Temp files and Sandbox.
Started it with the same results.

Returned to version 1.2 and am having no problems.  It runs fine from either the copy on the PC or the copy on the Sansa.

HTH, Thanks!
