Installation error message: "Permission for disc access denied!"
« on: April 29, 2009, 12:51:05 PM »
I formatted my 5G video iPod in MS-DOS (FAT32) and it has a mount point, but, when I try to run the "Complete Installation" in rockbox utility 1.2.1, it comes up with error message "No Ipod detected / Permission for disc access denied!" How do I change the permissions on the disc, or other wise remedy this? (I am on Mac OSX as an admin.)

Thanks.

First question: Where is rbutil located (what folder)?

I'll give you the solution once I know.

It is in a folder on the desktop. /Users/Dylan/Desktop/Rockbox

Open a Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal in the Finder), then type the following:

Code: [Select]
user@whatever$ cd Desktop/Rockbox

user@whatever$ sudo open rbutilqt.app

That should give rbutil the required root access.

Note that you only type what's *after* the "$ " above! The rest is just the bash prompt.

Did as you said and the utility opened, but same error message came up. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Use Rockbox Utility to just install the build alone, and not the bootloader. Then try installing the bootloader manually with iPodpatcher. The manual will give you instructions on how to use iPodpatcher.

That should get you all set.

Build installed fine. iPod patcher gives me this error:

[ERR]  Firmware partition doesn't contain Apple copyright, aborting.
[ERR]  FATAL: Permission denied on 1 device(s) and no ipod detected.
[ERR]  You need permissions for raw disc access for this program to work!

Did you "sudo" iPodpatcher? If not then you might try that.

iTunes is not running, but, when it is, it detects an "iPod in recovery mode."

"sudo" opening iPodpatcher resulted in the same error.

You mentioned earlier that you have a 5G iPod... absolutely certain? Plastic, glossy front and chrome back in either white or black?

Trust me on this one, quite a few people get the new iPod Classics mixed up with the older iPod videos. If you have a Classic, then you're out of luck, as Rockbox doesn't run on the Classic.

Absolutely certain. It does not have the vertical split-screen or beveled edges, and it is made of black plastic with a chrome backing. Also, it is definitely straight 5th generation, as opposed to one released in late 2006 (5.5), based on the serial number.

Have you tried running from a root console? I.e. run "sudo su -", then start rbutil from that command line. Other options:
- use Rockbox Utility to install the build but not the bootloader. Then use ipodpatcher to install the bootloader.
- try to get access to a different PC. I'd recommend using a windows machine as that is most likely the best tested platform due to its populatiry.

How did you reformat your ipod?  Did you follow the Rockbox instructions to convert a "macpod" to FAT32, or did you simply reformat it?

Does the Apple firmware still start and run correctly?
