Library/metadata management
« on: June 12, 2009, 01:10:47 PM »
I have begun the migration, almost everything I own is either open source or moded in some way and I stumbled upon rockbox from reddit.

Without using iTunes I want to re-sort all my music in my music folder appropriately by artist/album and use all the ID3 tags as the correct info that everything is renamed from.

I am running Win7 and LinuxMint so using iTunes to sort the library isnt really an option.  I can try iTunes in wine but I would rather avoid it if possible.

It looks like some options are Godfather or Media Monkey but I havent really figured out how to do what im trying to do.  I just know there has to have been many other people in a similar boat and I hope I dont have to go through 30GB manually.

Cliff Notes: I think Im looking for an app to re-structure my Music folder by ID3 tags.

Bonus 1: Fetching all album art

Bonus 2: Naming unnamed songs in my library or finding unknown artists

Sorry, but these things are things you really should just be Googling for.

Rockbox isn't media management software, and Rockbox doesn't require media management software. They're basically all third-party tools, and these forums (especially this section, which is for ROCKBOX General discussion) are for questions relating to the Rockbox software itself, or the tools and other files we provide with it.

I assure you, with just a little Googling you'll find plenty of music management tools out there, or syncing tools, or both. Which one to use, of course, depends on your own tastes.

Various metadata scanners allow you to set the path for each file based upon metadata tags.  EasyTAG should do what you want.

Here are some tools for downloading or extracting album art --> LINK

Regarding unnamed or untagged music in your library I have had decent success with Picard (a MusicBrainz scanner).  Of course if it has tags but not good file names then EasyTAG can handle this too.

Is this something that's appropriate for the 3rd party section of the forums?

Thank you very much!  Thats pretty much exactly the kind of info I was looking for.  I know once I make the conversion complete I will never need anything besides winamp but im looking for ways of making the transition easier.

And yes this may belong in the 3rd party apps section, sorry its my first post.

Holy crap, I did read them all, thats why I went to General because 3rd party sounded like add ons and integration, I was looking for a noobs section because I realized it was kind of outside a specific realm and since there was no noob section I went to general which said if you don't know where to post  then it goes here and they can be distributed to their appropriate forums.

I was just hoping to find someone that would say OMG, I just went through something similar, I used app X for this and app Y for that.  I can figure all these things out on my own and I will, I was just hoping for some insider info on how to do it the fastest or even the best phrases to use when searching google (since my rockbox vocabulary may not be on par).  If this thread is a waste and no one out there will have any answers then go ahead and delete it but I already have more info than I started with so for that I thank this forum.

There's also a UsefulTools page in the wiki which contains links to various utilities that you may find useful.
