Rockbox Utility - Check for update
« on: April 28, 2009, 03:30:52 AM »
Using rockbox utility today on my ipod I had no idea that there was a update till it I looked at themes and saw a user message for updating the utility.

If it wasn't for that I would have had no idea that there was a update to the utility.

The utility needs to check and automatically update to a new version of itself on load and also have in the about tab a check for update link.

If it can check for the latest rockbox version its obvious it should be able to check and update to a new utility version.

The release has been made just two days ago so it's quite new.

No, it does not need to. It would be a useful feature however (and I'd like to get that done eventually). But as the releases for Rockbox are done in a different way than the releases for Rockbox Utility this needs some extra work.

Perhaps it could start with first checking for a newer version and just tell the user about it?

We could easily just host a specific URL somewhere with "latest version number", or whatever.

Maybe instead of RBUtil checking for a newer version on its own, just 'piggyback' it with any online operation. So if the user tries to install a new build that requires a download, or what not, the first step is always "check if RBUtil is the newest version", and give the user a warning if it's not.

Sure, though I'd like to avoid having yet-another-file to maintain. It's not that updates coming too often, though. I had various ideas how to figure the most recent version, but as I'm currently working on other (IMO more important) things this has to wait. It's on my todo list :)

very tiny script in php , but can be written in any script language that handle regex.
1. Grab http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/RockboxUtility page
2. Use RegEx to find latest RButility version.

Other idea: place ex. rbutility.txt file on server with latest version inside, that can be updated after compiling. phpBB do the same for checking updates.

That's of course a way to do this, but I'd prefer to not check the wiki page for updates. There are mainly two reasons for this:
1. It's a wiki page.
2. Different binaries can have different releases. For example, in the past we had the AMD64 and OS X builds lagging behind several times. If Rockbox Utility notifies a user with a system the build is lagging behind about a new version but no release has been done, well ...

That's also an option (and a better one than checking the wiki), though I'd like to avoid having another file on the webserver. Which I've already stated.

To sum this up, there's no need for ideas -- I have various ideas myself and thought about them. There are two problems:
1. I haven't figured which idea I like best and want to implement.
2. Time.

If anyone is creating a patch and posting it to Flyspray it definitely will get considered, but simply talking about it and putting ideas in the forums doesn't make it magically appear. And there are other issues with Rockbox Utility I consider more important (but I've said that before).
