Problem with Compact flash
« on: April 27, 2009, 06:22:01 PM »
I have a iriver H320 with Compact flash SILICON POWER 200X 32GB, but the "H300.hex MOD" (http://www.rockbox.org/tw.../Main/CFModGuide/H300.zip) doesn't recognize the Compact flash (don't run under original firmware and don't run under Rockbox). I used this "Dealextreme" CF adaptor that is also linked in the guide: (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10886)

I can access the Compact flash under "Windows xp" (copy, cut, move,...), also the Compact flash is formated with SwissKnife V3.22.

What happens?

Which CF card are you using?
So far the best one I've tried is one of those generic oem
cards with a blue label sold on ebay made with Samsung chips.
The 32gb one has worked for a few months in my Gigabeat F
using an adapter similar to the dealextreme.  However just a
few days ago rockbox crashed and won't reboot.  I will probably
have to restore the system files to fix it, not sure if this is a long
term software issue, or the flash card has been overwritten
too many times in one spot by Rockbox (I haven't added any
new files since I first installed it).

There is NO CF card that is compatible with the original firmware.  This is a limitation in the original firmware, not Rockbox.  The developers of Rockbox have developed coding to modify the original firmware to make it compatible with CF cards through Rockbox, but only through Rockbox.  It requires BOTH the H300.hex mod AND Rockbox for irivers to connect with CF cards.

For what it's worth, you can still boot up a CF-modded iriver into original firmware and use the radio, or the charging screen, since they do not require access to the CF card or a hard drive.  Just turn on the iriver by holding down the record-button while you hold down the on-button to boot the original firmware.  As it boots up, it will say "Check HDD Connection" to let you know that the original firmware can't communicate with a CF card.

Rockbox does not modify the original firmware to make it compatible, it is completely separate.  The only thing that is done is to move the original firmware and insert a bootloader so that either Rockbox or the OF can be run.  The OF is not modified.

Thanks for that clarification about how this all actually works.  There is much to learn!

those may work in your device and mine (exactly like that with the blue square) woprks fine with RB in my ipod, but will not work with RB in my iriver H120. and yes I bought the correct adapter for iriver. sux, because I was thinking it would since RB supported it on my ipod.. OH well, guess i'll just install a 120gb HD or wait until the 64gb pretec come down a little in price
