custom battery limits on ipod video 30gb (32mb) board
« on: April 22, 2009, 08:48:40 AM »
Hi there; first time poster here; been lurking a bit, but havent been active here although i've been running RB on my ipods for about a year now. I modify ipods for fun and sometimes meager proffit. think red wine audio; I do the same mods along with installing RB or larger HDs and such.

Anyway, while doing this I often get supplied with hardware that is not what it is thought it is; mo0st commonly a 30gb board that had a 80gb (64mb) sticker on it. I swapped this out and use mine in a friends as it was more convenient as my mod was already done and I had time issues. anyway this sort of thing isnt uncommon, that an OEM board is sold on ebay as an 80gb (64mb) board when actually it is the 32mb version meaning that if installed in a 80gb chassis, with a 120gb drive (like mine at the moment) it is only possible to instal the 32mb RB build (of course) the ipod works fine of course with the 120gb drive installed albeit a little laggy, but the main problem I have at the moment and the reason for this post is I have installed a 950mah cameron Sino battery in this DIYMOD 5.5g, but RB will only allow me to select a maximum capacity of 800mah in the 30gb build. BTW I am aware that the ato install thinks that ALL ipod videos are 30gb,

so i'm wondering if I can modify the battery limits to include a couple more strings to allow for non standard 'mutant' builds such as mine. or even better if it has been done before as although I have an idea what has to be done. I have no idea how to do it. my skills lie in hardware tweaking rather than software. I know my way around an ipod and a computer in general, but coding has never been my thing; even as a multimedia student I avoided C++ like the plague

any help would be much appreciated, as at the moment my battery will not charge past 93% and I do not wish for that to remain/become its permanent maximum; i'm aware thats a little superstitious given the state of the battery technology nowadays, but the battery pack said to give a full charge the first time (which surprised me as I was under the impression that the memory effect did not apply to lithiion) and I cant or at least it is not being displayed correctly in my ipod (RB version 3.2 stable build) BTW kudos on the latest build guys; really improved battery life even before the battery upgrade; cant wait to see what the cameron sino is capable of in this thing; diud wonders for my H132CF with 2200mah

I do not wish to be a leach on this forum and will definately try and share as much of my knowledge of ipod hardware mods and maintenance as I have time for.

thanks in advance and thankyou to the dev team for creating such a wonderful peice of software. I run it on 2 of my own ipod videos (one 120gb HD and one 32CF) and one iriver H132CF and I love it.  8)

The battery capacity shouldn't affect how far it can charge. It affects the displayed time when it's estimating time remaining.

thats what I thought, is there something I have to do to get the battery display to be accurate?? likerunning battery bench again or something?? at the moment no matter how far I charge it it tops out at 93%

edit, now after being plugged in again for a while doing nothing but charging (but still on and mounted in OSX in apple firmware) it has gone down to 90 and then after a reboot down to 83%?? weird. By the way; I remember that I was able to charge without booting into apple firware before and now it does it every time since updating to 3.2. I have allowed accessory and car adapter mode. anything else I am missing??

cool, do you think that may have something to do with the battery not charging fully?? the fact that its charging under the apple firmware and batteries this large are not supported in the 30gb model?? sorry if I seem ignorant, just brainstorming a little and you are the victim lol

Larger capacity batteries should still fully charge under either firmware, as far as I know. The capacity shouldn't affect the voltage considered "full."

hmmm; perhaps i'm just not being patient enough. al;though its been charhing on and off all day. but it is the first charge and the battery is supplied totally empty; if this doesnt work i'll try plugged into a wall charger to finish it, perhaps the voltage supplied via USB is insufficient (although not through a hub, but a full powered USB port should be enough I would think)

update: the ipod just reached full 100% charge through RB FW :D so perhaps there is some issue there in the apple FW as it has been charging all day pretty much and after not 10-20 mins in RB charge I have a full 950mah charge on my ipod yay!!! :does little jig in honor of the lithion god:

I think the problem may be that you're trusting the percentage too much. How is the runtime?

check my edited post; the battery has just now reached 100% through RB FW charge in 10-20minute!!. no idea of the runtime; only just got the battery today and this is the first charge from empty. wanted to get it to full before running it for the first time. I realize lithions are supposed to be immune to the memory effect, but the packaging actually instructs you to charge it fully the first couple times. so who am I to argue with Cameron Sino
