Request some help with a KBD, can't browse KBD file

(1/2) > >>

gixxer:
I'm trying to define my own KBD file.
I've followed these instructions: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/LoadableKeyboardLayouts#The_Concept

I saved my layout keyboard file with notepad as a UTF-8 and copied the file (mykb.kbd) to my .rockbox directory on my Ipod Video (5th Gen).  The problem is the virtual keyboard layout is still the default and I can't browse to mykb.kbd because it does not show up in the File Browser in rockbox but the file is there in Windows Explorer.

Thanks for your help.

PaulJam:
Hi,
set the "Show Files" setting to "All", then you should see the file in the file browser.

gixxer:
Great!  I can now browse to my KBD and load it manually.  How do I make my keyboard layout the default on startup?  I already copied the KBD to the .rockbox directory but it does not load automatically.  Is there a config file I need to edit?

PaulJam:
Usually it should work that if you load a .kbd file that is inside the .rockbox directory that the new keyboard layout stays even after a reboot. At least it works for me.

How do you shut down your device and what is the filename of your keyboard layout (a very long filename could be problematic)?

The file /.rockbox/config.cfg should contain a line for example:
kbd: /.rockbox/-Custom-.kbd
But it shouldn't be necessary to edit that file manually.

gixxer:
I needed to do a hard reset for my custom KDB to be the default on startup.  <-  This needs to be added to the documentation.
Thanks for you help.
