Thanks for the pointer.
But considering this:
"Before you begin, be aware that this process can require a decent amount of time and technical knowledge and should not be attempted by a casual user"

and the fact that I have next to none programming/devopment knowledge I think this will be over my head.

So has someone else possibly compiled this patch recently and would share it ?

update:
After some sweatening hours I finally managed to apply the patch and compile. Yeah !
If you're interested see this thread for the "pitfalls" I went through as a total noob...

Davide-NYC:
Now that the FFT patch is in the source I hope for integration of the FFT into both the While Playing Screen and the While Recording Screen.

That would be truly wonderful, especially for recording.

nofish:
I totally agree.

Would love to see it working for incoming signals (even if there's some display latency envolved).

For me, it needn't even be while recording.
I probably might not use it this way because of being afraid it uses too much processor power and getting glitchy recordings (don't know if this could happen though).

But having it working in Record standby mode for adjusting mics and sound source  (which is not quite easy for recording loud sources ie a full Rock band using headphones alone) would be great.

Another idea I'd like to see in addition to the realtime peak mode we have now is an  average mode which accumulates the frequency distribution over a certain time.
For example, Voxengo Span which I posted a picture above has this mode.

I hope someone puts some work in this patch.

Btw, thanks for the info.
Haven't noticed yet that the FFT plugin is already in the source.
