Gigabeat touchpad

My Gigabeat F touchpad has been having problems. Every now and then it will get stuck pressing right. This invariably leads to it going into the settings, and then annoyingly changing them around. Once I reboot it, via the battery switch, the touchpad seems okay, and I then have to go in and reset all of the settings that were changed. It'll be okay for a few days before it does it again.

Thinking it was a hardware problem, I replaced the touchpad with a new one. I thought everything was fine, but this morning the problem happened again. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Any help would be appreciated.

IIRC this sometimes happens if the front panel of the Gigabeat F is has too much pressure applied to it (i.e. on too tight or being squeezed down). Do you happen to have your Gigabeat in a silicone case of some sort?

Also, it may be silly, but try removing the front panel of your Gigabeat and placing it back on, and take care to make sure the touchpad is centered accurately.

This is likely to happen if you've replaced the battery with one
that is a bit thicker than the original.  It could also happen if
your battery is going bad, sometimes LI batteries will swell up
when they go bad.

Yeah, the batteries do start to go bad and expand. Even batteries that seem to give good life - i had an F10 that had been working fine and gave me almost 17 hours on batterybench with the original battery, and then one day the touchpad started to act up.

The battery had plumped up enough that if i turned it sideways i could see the curvature of the front panel where it should be flat. And yet to look at the smooth black surface of the battery with the front panel off, it didn't look like it had expanded, and pressing down on it, it didn't feel less than solid - but having taken it out, it looks like a little pillow.

So, yeah, replace the battery. And it really isn't hard to modify the little trim piece that goes around the pluspad so that it's a little thinner.
