General Speed of transfer

(1/1)

popper:
Hi.  Rockbox user for years and years.  Love it and thank you.

Question:

I use my iPod 60 GB (5) as an external USB for portable firefox, portable uTorrent, etc.  Now, will I get better speeds when downloading / copying files in the iTunes mode rather than Rockbox?  In past I know that downloading / copying files under iTunes was faster than Rockbox.  Wondering (hoping) that this has changed.

ThaCrip:
well i dont have a IPOD so i cant say for sure but they did improve speed with a recent build of Rockbox on PP targets (which i think IPOD's are one of those along with Sansa e200 (which i got) etc)

only way to know is to try it ;)

just get a 'current build' and then try it... because v3.2 stable (or so) has noticeably slower USB transfers on my e250 vs a recent current build because they applied some patch to speed up USB transfers... on my device in particular i used to get about low 3's (in MB/s) now im getting about 4MB/s (according to Windows Vista) on my 8GB MicroSDHC (Class 2) card (mine is a Flash device so i assume the transfer speeds would be even better on a IPOD since it's hard drive based.)

here is the exact commit i was talking about... http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/10015 (took effect on the r20570 build or newer)

TexasRockbox:
File transfers have been speeded up for iPod and and other Portal Player based units.  However, transfers are not as fast as if you were using the iPod in iPod mode and syncing with iTunes.

I sync my Rockboxed iPod using Microsoft's free Sync Toy 2.0 and transfers are pretty fast.  Rough estimate of about a second per my average-sized song (5MB more or less).
