Ideas for a plugin?
« on: April 04, 2009, 08:49:34 AM »
I want an idea for a plugin - because ever since I finished my first plugin (which I have yet to upload to the tracker), I have been itching to make another one. I want it to be useful to Rockbox users, because if I feel that's the case I usually work harder to make it good. Basically, I need motivation. So what plugin do you feel is needed most in Rockbox?

Edit: I was also thinking of making a lyrics plugin, that scrolls the lyrics on the screen as you listen to your mp3's

There's also a patch for this idea on the tracker: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/7432
It also has fallen out of sync, though more recently than the Contact patch.

Well, it seems that nobody really felt there was a need for it, because no one really used it or tried to get it submitted to the main RockBox build.

People have certainly used it.  It has been built into various unsupported builds at various times.  There are several reasons that a patch may not make it into SVN.  If you wanted to make your own plugin or take up work on the patch in the tracker, I doubt that lack of user interest would be what kept it out of SVN.

Maybe if you get some time you could work on a clone of dope wars, as suggested here:
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=19966.0

I always liked that game  :D

Then again, I think I'm too concerned with getting a maximal amount of games and gizmo's into rockbox ::)

I don't think I'd want to make that a plugin - I don't support the use of drugs in any way.

I understand and agree with your stance... Maybe you could clone it in a more sociably acceptable way? I remember seeing a clone called FoodWars once, where you run a wholesaler and have o maximise food profits instead of drugs =] just an idea xD

I must admint that I don't see the point of this thread at all. The Feature Ideas forum is full of ideas. Are you asking that people summarise all of them here, or what?

@motionman95: Space War (for the Palm OS) is based partly off of Dope Wars, minus the drug theme. I don't believe it's in C, but I thought I'd throw that out.

Also, I've been working (off and on) on a script for a game plugin idea (an RPG, to be specific). If I manage to finish it and you're interested, I'll post it somewhere for you to look at.

The way I look at it, he's just asking for discussion on what's been suggested but not done, all in one thread (as opposed to diving into each thread), and an opinion on which of them is most wanted.

I think a piano plugin would be neat to have.

Just have a piano like screen, where you move around on the keys to press a note that would be played through the headphone jack.

Well, rockdoom does and so does Rockboy, but those arent really plugins... But the metronome plays sound as is a plugin. But a piano would involve more than just clicks...

As for getting the sound files, might want to try something like midi sequences or an approach similar to this guys -http://www.frontiernet.net/~imaging/play_a_piano.html

Another cool thing to add to it would be to add a feature to transpose the notes into different keys (like for a Eb saxophone, Bb trumpet, ect.). And all that would need would be changing what key played what.

What do you mean Doom and Rockboy aren't plugins? They're both just as much plugins as anything else are.
