Support for an address book plugin?
« on: April 02, 2009, 11:49:39 AM »
I'm thinking on making one - and I was wondering if anyone would support me on doing it. Does anyone else want this? Maybe it's not needed...I don't know.
Anyway, what are your ideas?  ??? Maybe I should do it just for practice's sake.

that sounds like a good idea to me, it would be nice to be able to import vcard contacts to it.

Just so you're aware, someone worked on this idea previously: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/4728?type=4

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best way to store contacts. I'm thinking of using something like what the DiskTidy plugin uses, like this:

Quote
< Contact >
   F_Name: Harold
   M_Name: H.
   L_Name: Hopper
   Phone: 713-678-9000
   Address: 11345 Fawn Crest
   Zip: 77466
   Email: rockboxContact@yahoo.com
< Contact >
   F_Name: Jonah
   M_Name: J.
   L_Name: Jameson
   Phone: 713-678-9000
   Address: 11345 New York Dr.
   Zip: 74422
   Email: spidey@yahoo.com

It would be even better if Rockbox C supported XML, then I could use that.

Wouldn't it be better to use an existing standard, like vCard?

I guess. Although vCard support would be harder to code. I guess I'll build off the other plugin's code.

Edit: LOL, I would be easy just to use something like this, but rockbox isn't compatible with that, of course.

Yeah, I was just thinking from a usability standpoint it makes more sense to be able to handle a format that people are likely to have contact information in -- or one that can be easily converted.

That project you linked to is licensed under an MIT license, which appears to be GPL compatible.  So, in principle you could use the code in that project, though I don't know any particulars about it's suitability for embedded players.

ccard seems to only have 1 malloc & 2 realloc calls (no FP also), so I don't think it would be terribly hard to get it working under Rockbox..

Re: Best Ways to Store Device Owner Info

Hi, are there any best practices when it comes to storing the contact details of the device owner in an easily accessible place, especially on devices with a screen, to facilitate retrieval when the player is lost? Have there been attempts (plugins?) to add this functionality to the main menu as a feature?

After posting the above elsewhere I started wondering if the contact info could be stored in the vCard format and I came across this thread. It seems the address book idea has not been developed further?
