Capacity of sansa e250
« on: April 02, 2009, 11:18:11 AM »
Hello, first i want thank you guys for that nice piece of software. I bought sansa because for rockbox.
But i have one question for users of that player. E250 is 2GB which pratcically means about 1.8 gB. But my second hand player has only 1.2 GB free space with no music on it.  :o Checked in explorer and firmware files takes about 30 MB. So, is there some more hidden folders with some files, or every model has that curious capacity. Or maybe some parts of my flash memory are broken? Do you think that just dirty format and installing fresh firmware can help??

i got a e250 and my capacity (according to the properties in Windows Explorer) is exactly... 1,984,987,136bytes (i.e. just shy of 2GB)

if there's nothing you care about on the device i would just format it and copy the rockbox files back onto it and see what happens.

Good news!!
My low capacity was caused by filesystem errors on my player. I plugged my sansa to computer with windows 7 and scanned. System recovered some files from music folder (but i deleted them) and repaired bad sectors. Now its 1.82 GB as expected.  :) Previos owner had hard time with it ;D
BTW. Does anyone know why sansa show up twice in my computer? One drive is I: sansa 250, i can enter and see all stuff, the second drive is removable drive. When doubleclicked i see: "Please insert disc into removable drive J:". Xp and seven as well.

This is the MicroSD slot. There's no card in it, so it gives you that message.

Thanks a lot!
I found that my player was used with Windows Media Player. There was database files on root folder generated by WMP. Maybe that crappy player caused filesystem corruption. Dont use that s**t anyway ;D

Sorry for changing subject but dont want make new topic. Recently usb charging was added to sansas. Is rockbox suppose to start when sansa plugged to usb port? Now just bootloader(?) start and then OF.
Secondly, are developers going to add in near future disc mode to rockbox? I mean to transfering files to sansa while running RB and charging.

The current builds have USB mode enabled.  The release version does not.  If you want Rockbox to boot when you insert a USB cable while the player is turned off then you need to install an updated bootloader.

edit: I don't know where that previous flyspray task came from.  Follow the link in the next post.

http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/9955 ... using that will make it so Rockbox boots all the time when powering on player by connecting it to the USB port ;) (you can still force it to boot original firmware by pressing and holding the left button on the dpad when powering it on.

'sansapatcher.exe -a PP5022.mi4' (without the ') will install the bootloader to your Sansa e200 series player.

Thanks for that tip. I went to that URL and downloaded bootloaders.zip but the c200 folder only contains the file firmware.mi4 rather than PP5022.mi4

Can I presume they have changed the name of the file since you posted?
I may as well await your reply (please) before proceeding.

For the benefit of others reading this, I include the following quote from http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-sansae200/rockbox-buildch2.html
   1.  Download sansapatcher.exe from http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/sandisk-sansa/sansapatcher/win32/sansapatcher.exe  and run it whilst logged in with an administrator account.
   2. If all has gone well, you should see some information displayed about your e200 and e200R Series and a message asking you if you wish to install the Rockbox bootloader. Press i followed by ENTER, and sansapatcher will now install the bootloader. After a short time you should see the message “[INFO] Bootloader installed successfully.” Press ENTER again to exit sansapatcher.

The c200 uses firmware.mi4

The e200 uses PP5022.mi4

I read the Patch page and it looks like , if you are using an e200 with the Start Screen setting set to "Resume Playback" , that this new Bootloader isn't working properly.

Did I miss something?

BTW, The Sansa comes with a bunch of crappy music that is loaded on the MTP side, did you delete these files?

http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/9957 mentions having start screen set to Database may also cause problems.

Thanks yapper but I note from another thread:
Quote from: AlexP on March 30, 2008, 06:45:08 AM
Rockbox does not yet have a USB mode for the c200s (and indeed all portalplayer devices).  Please use the OF to transfer music.
The above is a response to someone who has a similar issue to what I now have when plugging in USB cable.

Regardless of what I set my start screen to (as warned by BruceHP),
when I plug USB cable in, the screen Flashes the following sequence over and over again:
SansaDisk Logo
RockBox Logo & "Boot Ver. 20108-09022"
RockBox Logo & "Ver. 19569-081223"
USB Icon

My computer (running XP) does not show any device connected.

When I interrupt the above flashing sequence by pressing the Select button on my
Sansa 250c, XP asks me to install a driver.

Can anyone please tell me what driver XP means? I never had to install drivers for my Sansa 250c up until now. Or is AlexP whom I quoted above correct: this whole quest is futile on 250c?

You'll note that that quote from me is from March 2008 - quite a long time ago.  At the time it was true, it no longer is.  Rockbox has a USB mode on the c200 now.

What should happen is that when you plug in the sansa from off, it boots the OF and goes to USB mode.  When you plug in from Rockbox it uses Rockbox USB mode.

You seem to be running a very old version. Use Rockbox Utility to update to something a lot more recent.

Well spotted both of you (AlexP & yapper). Installing latest rockbox indeed fixed the problem and it works perfectly. Thanks.
