Newbie here...few questions
« on: March 30, 2009, 09:39:47 AM »
Ok so heres what I got going on.  Well I came across Rockbox and gave this an install.  First thing I noticed was all those songs I thought were gone were suddenly available again.  I now plan on creating a list of all the music I have on here today, and am going to wipe my Ipod clean so I can get everything nice  borganized.  Ive been fiddling with this rockbox for a few hours now.  I am curious about a few things.  Can i just drag and drop my mp3s into itunes like i used to and still have them play?  I tried dropping a few folders with some .flac files straight into the G: directory for my ipod and my computer.  They dont show up under the database, rather the files.  I also cannot really figure out how to create a playlist for when im out and about doing certain things like I could do with Itunes.  Is that possible?  I had a problem with the initial install and had an error when it came to the themes portion.  As a result I had to manually install the themes.  Not sure if that is typical or not.  Mabey i should redownload the install?  Anyhow, if someone could answer these questions I would  I would greatly appreciate it.  I will probably have more, but dont want to jump the gun.  Still have to create a textfile of all my music so I can start redownloading alot if it.  Thanks in advance!

Please remember these are on-topic forums. The first half of your post basically had nothing to do with Rockbox, and clutters search results. I've trimmed your post somewhat, and removed the mention of piracy. We respect copyrights here. What you do in your own home is your business, but don't bring it up here.

As to using playlists, the database, and playing music, this is covered in the manual. You can still use iTunes to sync, but you won't be able to access the songs easily through the "Files" view, only by way of the database, and only for non-encrypted audio.

My apologies.  However, I read the manual completely and could not really come up with a solid answer for my questions.  Perhaps I was misreading it..?

Well, tell me what you're trying to do for each of them, and what you think the manual is telling you to do. I can't really help until I know exactly what part you're getting stuck at for the things you're asking about.

The database has nothing to do with iTunes, otherwise the manual would mention needing to use iTunes with it. It just depends on your files having the appropriate metadata (ID3 tags for MP3s).

well im in the process of copying all my music off the hidden ipod directory right now.  after some browsing i managed to find out how to do that.  I understand it makes no mention of having to use itunes.  However, the songs I added straight to the G: just show up under files as opposed to the database where I want them to go.  Is it because they were .flac files?  I tried a couple mp3s as well, it all just goes to the files.  Is there a specific folder I should be placing the music?

Have you tried manually updating it?

No I did not try the manual update.  What I think I am going to do is just load all my music via iTunes or some other program, and allow the auto-update to do its thing that way.  Hopefully this will solve the issue for me.  While loading my music straight to the drive is appealing, I think it may just end up being more of a hassle and less organized for me personally.  I do appreciate your help, and will come back if I have any further questions.
Thanks

I could be wrong, but I don't think you'll be able to load FLAC files from iTunes.

Just in case you missed something in the manual, here are the two sections that are of interest to you. I don't think you can do anything wrong if you follow them. Maybe the database problem is a result of your files not being tagged correctly. i suggest you use one of these tools (The Godfather is my favourite) to get this task done.
