Newly installed Rockbox won't play ANY music files (iPod Video 5.0)
« on: March 30, 2009, 04:08:43 AM »
I just installed rockbox, and cannot get it to play any files on my 5th gen iPod Video. I deleted all of the old music files from when I had the iPod OS installed, and re-added them by dragging/dropping into a D:\Music folder. They are all in .mp3 format, and do not have any DRM.

When I select a music file and hit play, the Now Playing interface briefly pops up, the song name, artist, etc. are all listed as (root), and the Now Playing interface disappears, and is replaced by the database/file-browser. (Whichever I used to select the file to play.) Any ideas on what is happening?

Edit: I installed via the auto-installer. The installer failed on the "Installing Themes" portion: I get "Getting themes information..." and "the following error occurred: unknown error". I assume that the functional portions of Rockbox are correctly installed at this point. Is this the case, or would I be better off figuring out a manual install?

If you haven't played any music, pressing play should say "Nothing to resume." You should be hitting "select" to launch songs.

Correct.  The new themes site has only gone live very recently, so I assume RbUtil ("auto installer") just doesn't work with it yet.

In case you have to do something like this again, there's a quicker way.  The Apple firmware/iTunes stores music in the iPod_Control/Music/ directory, with obfuscated filenames like MFJU.mp3, IDSK.mp3, etc.  Instead of deleting and then re-copying (which can take a while), you could use a tagging/renaming program to simply give the existing files proper names.  The iPod_Control directory is hidden, so you'll need to show hidden files in your file browser.

Oh, hell, I can't believe it was this simple. Thank you.
